| Kerry's drowning in debt
WAYWARD Kerry Katona is on the brink of going bust after blowing a fortune on cocaine, booze, partying and flash cars. Despite being on TV EVERY night in Iceland's I'm A Celebrity ads, the hard-up star is drowning in a tsunami of debt. The taxman alone wants 200,000 by the end of the year and if she can't find the money she's facing bankruptcy. In desperation Kerry and her husband, former drug dealer Mark Croft, have now hired a team of professional insolvency advisers to help them DODGE bankruptcy court, AVOID paying the huge sum, and DUCK 60,000 of loans and credit card bills. But the experts fear that is just the tip of the iceberg and the true total of the former Atomic Kitten's debts could top 1MILLION. Even with the Inland Revenue off her back, Kerryexpecting her fourth childcould STILL be made bankrupt by other creditors and lose her 1.2m home and fleet of luxury cars.
Wickes Furniture gives up hope of reorganizing
It appears the 20 Wickes Furniture stores in the Chicago area may have a short future. The Wheeling-based Wickes Furniture Co. announced Tuesday it has abandoned hopes of reorganization and agreed to put itself on the bankruptcy auction block before the end of the month, according to court papers. Citing ''operating losses and liquidity concerns,'' Wickes said Monday it would seek bankruptcy court approval to sell all its assets by Feb. 29. The company said it would be sold either as an operating business or piecemeal in a liquidation. Wickes Furniture stores are currently selling merchandise in the store and in the warehouse, but taking only credit-card payments. Back orders may be subject to a refund. Merchandise was still being delivered and serviced on Tuesday, a service representative said.
Vote for Me
So what happened is that independent candidates were the most popular and they won a lot of seats, says Harb. But after the elections, the NDP drew a large portion of those independent candidates to their ranks and they became members of the NDP, despite the fact the people voted for them as independents. About 60 percent of the population are totally alienated from the NDP; keeping in mind that the percentage of people who vote is rather small. So there was a gap on the political arena; there was a political void. In any society that claims to be a democracy, this political void must be filled and there have to be political parties representing the political powers and the silent majority. We call for this silent majority to speak up and participate in the political arena. .
Chase Bank Accuses Florida Law Firms of Running Debt-Relief Scam
Chase Bank USA is suing two Coral Springs, Fla., attorneys specializing in reducing consumer debt and South Florida affiliates, claiming they are engaging in blatantly illegal and fraudulent practices. The federal suit filed Friday in Wilmington, Del., accuses Hess Kennedy Chartered, lawyer Laura Hess, Edward Kennedy, affiliated companies and others of using "an unlawful debt elimination scheme" relying on lawsuits challenging valid credit card charges. Attorney Jeffrey Campos of Coral Springs and the Legal Debt Center, which has the same Coral Springs address and suite number as Hess' law firm, also are named as defendants. In addition, attorneys general in Florida, North Carolina and West Virginia are looking into Hess Kennedy's operations, and the Florida Bar has moved to suspend Hess' license.

Identity thieves turn to old-fashioned channels — mail and phones
NEW YORK When it comes to identity theft, most people think they're especially vulnerable when they're working on their computers or when fraudsters hack into big databases and steal card numbers. In fact, consumers are far more likely to be victimized if their wallet, checkbook or credit card is lost or stolen, according to a new study released by Javelin Strategy & Research. The research group, which is based in San Francisco, also found that as financial institutions and retailers have improved their in-store and online security, ID thieves have turned to more traditional channels of theft, especially the telephones and the mail. While the incidence of ID fraud through in-store and online purchases declined in the latest survey, conducted last October, from a similar study in 2006, the portion of fraud stemming from mail or telephone purchases jumped to 40 percent from 3 percent.
Terry McCrann: Frequently treated as suckers
DO we have the rip-off for you. Perhaps the 'flying kangaroo' should be renamed the 'fly-by-night roo'. Or more simply, Dodgy Airlines. Qantas has unveiled a very special offer for its frequent flyers. Special as in: outrageous and offensive. Very simply, it is to use 100,000 frequent flyer points to save yourself around $750 on a return economy flight to Europe. You still have to pay around $1500. Compare that with only 128,000 points to fully pay for a return economy flight to Europe. That's to say, the extra 28,000 points would save you the $1500. Indeed, its worse. Because these particular flights are lower-cost restricted ones. You could get a $4200 full-cost economy flight to Europe for those 128,000 points. Now airlines, and the banks and credit card companies that link to them, have a clear hierarchy of 'preferred' use of FF points.

There's something rotten about Enchanted .
It looks like the 2007 holiday season has found its grandma movie, that family-friendly release you can schlep the whole clan to without spending the entire running time regretting your own birth. Enchanted, the Disney fairy tale spoof starring Amy Adams as an animated heroine who's banished from her cartoon kingdom to live-action New York, earned $50.5 million in its first week, winning the holiday weekend and outperforming every Disney Thanksgiving release since Toy Story 2 (1999). Adams, an actress who's dwelt on the edge of recognizablity for the past several years (nominated for a supporting-actress Oscar for Junebug in 2005, she also did a multiepisode stint on The Office and gave Will Ferrell a memorably suggestive pep talk in Talladega Nights), will no doubt become a household name and a hot Hollywood property as a result of Enchanted.
Padgett, Patterson and White are region's best trio inside in years
At the University of Louisville, senior David Padgett outplayed Georgetown All-American Roy Hibbert in upsetting the Hoyas. Indiana University senior D.J. White willed the Hoosiers past Ohio State to yet another road victory and sole possession of second place in the Big Ten Conference. And University of Kentucky freshman Patrick Patterson did what he usually does, with 12 points and seven rebounds while playing all but one minute in a win over Alabama. Can you remember the last time all three schools were this good in the post? At the same time? .
